Soundwaves 2  February 2016 – was a whirlwind of music making, creativity, friendships and learning. Oh! And fun. We always have way too much fun at Soundwaves!

Over three days in the Regional Cultural Centre in Letterkenny Donegal we had each young musician improvise in a group, lead a group of improvising musicians and Compose both big group pieces and small band songs in various combinations of musicians and instrumentation. It was a crash course on all the tools you need to unlock creativity and boost musicianship for song-writing, composing and ensemble playing. And the young talent, as per usual, knocked it out of the park!

We managed to find time (don’t ask me how!) to create resource videos just for you which are now ready to release! These incredibly talented (and now very experinced) young musicians are on camera giving advice and tips on how we do what we do at Soundwaves. How to improvise together and how to creatively conduct a group of improvising musicians. We all learn from each other and some of these young musicians explain what happens better than we can. About half of Soundwaves 2016 musicians were graduates from Soundwaves 2015, so they have plenty of experience on this unique, but incredibly musically intuitive and creative way of working. If you need a reminder of the kind of breathtaking music it can unlock in these talented youngsters, take a trip back to the Soundwaves performance!

SO. If you have ever asked – how on earth did they DO that when watching Soundwaves; these videos are for you!

Here are the young musicians talking about their experience with improvising in a group and creatively conducting. Followed by video resources on some of the leading and conducting techniques we suggested. Hand signals to communicate with each other in live jam sessions, that show how to portray dynamics, lead in and cut offs, isolating groups and more. It’s a real insight into what the young musicians get up to on these courses and a real insight in how to make it happen in your own musical world. So enjoy!

A huge THANK YOU to the fabulous Donegal Music Education Partnership and Music Generation, Arts Council partnership who enabled Soundwaves to happen.

AND last but not least, a huge THANK YOU to all participants involved in Soundwaves 2016. You inspired, you impressed and we had so much fun making this incredible, mind bending music with you. We wish you all the best with your musical adventures and we hope to see you again soon!
