The annual Musical Futures Northern Ireland showcase is scheduled for 20th June 2013, 10am-2.30pm at St Cecilia’s College, Derry/Londonderry as part of the City of Culture celebrations. As well as a showcase for the work of participating schools and students some inspirational artists have agreed to perform during the day.

Wall2Wall Music in partnership with the City of Culture Music Promise is delighted to welcome the internationally acclaimed beatboxer, Shlomo. A Guinness World Record holder, Shlomo gave up astrophysics to perform his amazing vocal pyrotechnics. It was a good move. Since then he has won global acclaim and worked with some of the biggest names in music including Bjork, Damon Albarn, Jarvis CockerMartha WainwrightImogen HeapThe Specials, DJYoda and even comedians the Mighty Boosh. In the process he has consistently pushed the boundaries of beatboxing, bringing the art form to new and unexpected audiences through such diverse collaborations. According to The Times: “He’s like a one-man Hollywood action film soundtrack”

Also gracing the stage will be Derry native pop sensation, the Wonder Villains. Wonder Villains are Eimear Coyle, Cheylene Murphy, Kieran Coyle and Ryan McGroarty. From Derry, they make blistering anti-pop, not entirely dissimilar in spirit from that legendary Derry band…the Undertones

Wondervillains Band ShotThe band have played America, Morocco, toured the UK and supported the likes of New Young Pony Club, The Human League and The Undertones amongst others, as well as playing on the Introducing stage at Radio 1’s One Big Weekend

They smash through two minute pop songs while cranking the distortion on their homemade keyboard sounds and their first four singles Zola, Ferrari, TV and Blonde received plays nationally on BBC Radio 1, Radio 2, 6 Music, XFM, Q, Absolute Radio. Radio 1 support also came in the form of a Maida Vale session for Huw Stephens and a 30 minute broadcast of their live set from Radio 1 Academy, based in The Nerve Centre during the 2013 Big Weekend. The band’s debut album ‘Rocky’ will be out later in the year.

Musical Futures is a movement to reshape music education driven by teachers for teachers. At its heart is a set of pedagogies that bring non-formal teaching and informal learning approaches into more formal contexts, in an attempt to provide engaging, sustainable and relevant music making activities for all young people.
