Broken Crayons Release New Single ‘Fear/Future’
Broken Crayons have come out of the Soundwaves project with emotive lyrics, cinematic music and general epicness! As a band made up of Trombone (Kieran Sharkey) Accordion (Liam Orr) Guitar (Niall Brennan, Amy Tinney) Cello (Ross Skinnader) Keyboard (Adam Grady) and Vocals (Ross Skinnader, Amy Tinney) they have created some amazingly unique sounds. Here we catch up with singer and guitarist Amy about their single Fear/Future and the Broken Crayons experience so far!
Who are Broken Crayons?
We are a band ages 13-17 formed by Wall2Wall’s latest project called Soundwaves.
You met at the Soundwaves project in Letterkenny. How has the first two weeks gone? Was it what you expected?
The first two weeks were fantastic, we met so many new friends and got to experience different kinds of genres. It was what I expected, if not better!
You wrote this song in 3 days, after just meeting each other! Did you find it hard to gel ideas or was it an exciting opportunity to write with people you just met?
It was hard to think at the start but once we got into it it was easy. It was a really exciting opportunity to get to know the band members more.
Your music is so evocative and you explore some epic themes in your song. What is the song about?
The song is mainly about emigration as most young people have to move out of Ireland to find jobs or to just start over.
Do you think you all might leave Ireland one day?
Most of us want to travel but we are still unsure if we will live abroad.
What’s your favourite line in the song?
My favourite line is “Broken crayons still colour”
Tell us more about the music video concept! Did you have fun shooting it?
The music video is very simple but fun, we had so much fun filming. It was such an experience getting to work with Joe and learning how to do it all ourselves.
How does it feel to see your song have a video and be released so quickly after writing it? What’s been your favourite part of the process?
It’s amazing because we had only just met and we wrote a song within a couple of days and then made a video. It was unbelievable, my favourite part of the process has been playing with different instruments.
