Advanced Utopia Release New Single ‘Black and White’
Advanced Utopia – the futuristic, alternative, indie-pop band with members Aisling Ni Fhionnain (voice) Keith Watson (digital sounds) Kyle MacCauley (acoustic guitar) Oisin Rafferty (electric guitar) and Jennifer Kilcoyne (violin and voice) writing killer music for the Soundwaves Project. We catch up with singer Aisling and digital sound maestro Keith about their brand new single ‘Black and White’ and the Advanced Utopia experience so far!
Who are Advanced Utopia?
We are a new five piece pop/indie/alternative band from Letterkenny who met 2 weeks ago at the Soundwaves project
You met at the Soundwaves project in Letterkenny. How has the first two weeks gone? Was it what you expected?
Keith: No, I expected it to be just a group of people playing music, I didn’t expect to have a whole band with music videos and promotions
Aisling: Honestly I didnt know what to expect, I was a bit nervous at the beginning but I’ve really enjoyed the past two weeks working with my lovely bandmates!
You wrote this song in 3 days, after just meeting each other! Did you find it hard to get ideas or was it an exciting opportunity to write with people you just met?
Aisling: It was definitely a challenge writing a new song in 3 days with 4 strangers but it was also really fun and rewarding.
Keith: At the start, it was extremely difficult, but after we got the concept, it all just flew very easy.
The song ‘Black and White’ is about an old computers feeling redundant, which is an amazing concept! How did you come up with that?
Keith: I don’t really know, it just happened. Once we decided upon the category of technology, it just worked.
Aisling: We ended up looking at how technology is changing and advancing so rapidly. That and a joke about Feargus (our producer and Wall2Wall music facilitator) and his old laptop!
The concept also leads to some brilliant lyrics. What’s your favourite line in your song?
Keith: I think my favourite line is “advanced utopia, connecting near and far….”
Aisling: Same! We got our band name from that line so it has a special place in my heart.
Your music video has flashing lights, broken technology and an epic fight scene in it! Tell us about the video shoot and the ideas behind it.
Keith: Well, again, I don’t know how it happened. I guess, we had the concept of using the projector for scenes, and my dad owns a computer shop, so I guess that’s how we ended up with so many old and broken computers. The seams just came together last minute and it really worked!
Aisling: It was so much fun to shoot too! Its not often I get a chance to get covered in wires, glitter and gold facepaint and shoot a fight scene lying on the floor!
How does it feel to see your song have a music video and be released so quickly after writing it? What’s been your favourite part of the process?
Aisling: Honestly its all been kind of a blur! Its amazing to see our finished song and music video and to think we made them in just two weeks!
Keith: I don’t really have a favourite part, I loved it all!
What is next for Advanced Utopia and its band members?
Aisling: Well hopefully Black and White will do well and after that who knows? Im excited to see what the future holds for us
Keith: I don’t know what is next for Advanced Utopia, I haven’t really thought about it. I guess that’s for later on!
